Is an SMS verification number the same as a SIM?

No.
You don't get a SIM card or a phone line.
You get one mobile number in your account for a short window, long enough to receive the verification text, and you can't make or receive calls on it.

That's enough for an app's SMS check.
For a number you'll keep and use every day, a SIM from a local carrier is the right tool, and for repeated codes over weeks, a rented number sits in between.

What "verified SMS number" means on the app's side

Once you type the code back, the app marks the number as verified: it now trusts that the account belongs to whoever received that SMS.
Some apps show a badge, others simply let you continue.

The verification stays on the account even after the number's window ends.
If the app asks to verify the number by SMS again later (a new device, a password reset), you'll need the same number, which is why people who log in often choose a rental.

SMS verification FAQ

What is an SMS verification number?

A phone number used to receive the code an app texts you during sign-up or login.
You type the code back into the app to prove you can receive messages on that number.

How do I verify a number by SMS?

Enter the number in the app, choose to receive the code by SMS, then type the code you get.
With SMS Falcon, the code shows up in your account.

What's the difference between verifying by SMS and by call?

By SMS the code arrives as a text; by call a voice reads it out.
SMS Falcon numbers receive texts only, so always pick the SMS option.

Can I use one number to verify more than one app?

One number covers one verification.
For several apps, buy a number for each, or rent a number if you need it longer.

What is an SMS verification code and how long does it last?

A short one-time code, usually 4 to 8 digits.
Most apps let it work for a few minutes, so type it as soon as it shows up.

What does "verified SMS number" mean?

It's the number an app has confirmed by sending it a code that you typed back.
The app then links that number to your account.

I want to send verification codes to my users. Can SMS Falcon do that?

No.
SMS Falcon numbers receive codes.
Sending codes to your own users needs an SMS sending service.
If you want to receive codes from a script, see our API.

What happens if the SMS verification code never arrives?

The charge goes back to your balance automatically when the number expires without a code.

Which countries can I get an SMS verification number from?

156+ countries.
The countries page lists each one with its starting price.

Can the number receive calls?

No.
It receives text messages only.

How is this different from an OTP number?

It isn't a different product: an OTP number is the same number named after the one-time password it receives.
The OTP page explains the code itself.

How is this different from a non-VoIP number?

Non-VoIP describes where a number comes from: a mobile carrier range rather than an internet-phone one.
It matters for apps that refuse VoIP lines.
