## Adding a phone to a Microsoft account

Microsoft sends a security code by text when you add a phone as security info, sign in from a new place, or recover the account. Work and school accounts set up SMS sign-in through their organization.

1. **Open your security info.** Sign in at account.microsoft.com and open Security › Manage how I sign in.
2. **Add a phone number.** Choose to add a sign-in or verification method, pick phone, and enter the number from your SMS Falcon account.
3. **Wait for the security code.** Microsoft texts a numeric code. Keep the page open.
4. **Type it to confirm.** Enter the code. The phone is now security info on the account.

## When the Microsoft code doesn't arrive

Microsoft's troubleshooting page covers why codes go missing. These are the common cases.

- **The code doesn't come.** Request a new code once, then try another country if it still doesn't arrive. You're refunded automatically for a code that never arrives.
- **Microsoft offers a passkey instead.** Microsoft is moving personal accounts away from SMS codes. If it suggests a passkey or a verified email, that route doesn't need a phone at all.
- **The number is refused.** Some ranges aren't accepted. Pick another country from the list.
- **A work or school account asks for a phone.** Your organization decides which methods are allowed. If SMS is one of them, the number works the same way.

## Personal accounts are leaving SMS, work accounts still use it

Microsoft has said it is **phasing out SMS codes** for sign-in and recovery on **personal Microsoft accounts**, in favour of passkeys and a verified email. Personal accounts that haven't switched yet can still get codes by text today.

**Work and school accounts** (Microsoft 365, Microsoft Entra) keep SMS as a method when the organization allows it. That's where a phone number for Microsoft verification stays useful the longest.

## What people confirm on Microsoft with our numbers

- **Work or school accounts that allow SMS.** Add a phone method when your organization's policy permits it.
- **Outlook.com accounts not yet on passkeys.** Add a phone as security info while the account still uses text codes.
- **Your personal number stays private.** Keep your everyday number out of one more account.

## Which numbers Microsoft accepts

With Microsoft, acceptance varies by country rather than by app rule. The list starts at Indonesia; if one country fails, the next usually works. Every number we sell comes from a mobile operator range, and Microsoft still runs its own check on each one.

If one country doesn't work, the next one in the list usually will, and a number that never receives its code costs nothing. [How OTP numbers work](https://smsfalcon.com/otp-number).

## Microsoft and Outlook verification code FAQ

### Does Microsoft still verify accounts by SMS?

Many accounts still get text codes today, but Microsoft is phasing SMS out for personal accounts in favour of passkeys and verified email. Work and school accounts keep SMS when the organization allows it.

### Can I use this number for Outlook?

Yes. Outlook.com uses your Microsoft account, so a phone added there covers Outlook too.

### Does it work for Microsoft 365 work or school accounts?

If your organization allows SMS as a method, yes. The organization decides which methods are available.

### Why is Microsoft texting me codes I didn't ask for?

Someone may have typed your email at a sign-in page. Don't share the code, and check your account's recent activity.

### Does Microsoft accept virtual numbers?

Microsoft sends security codes to most mobile ranges, but with SMS being phased out on personal accounts, a passkey is often the simpler route. If a code never arrives, the number costs nothing.

### Why does Microsoft cost more in some countries?

Each country has its own price for Microsoft, from $0.02 up to $0.21. The list is sorted so the cheapest comes first.

### What if the Microsoft code never arrives?

You're refunded automatically. If the number doesn't receive the code before it expires, the charge goes back to your balance and you can try another country.

### How often does the Microsoft code arrive?

We publish one figure for every app: 90–98% delivery, from our own delivery study. It's the same for Microsoft in all 36 countries.
