## Receiving an SMS code or sending one?

"SMS verification" means two different jobs. This page is about the first one.

- **You're verifying an account.** An app wants to **verify your number by SMS**. You need a number that receives the code: that's what SMS Falcon sells, starting in the picker above.
- **You're a business sending codes.** You want to text one-time codes to your own users. That's an SMS sending service, which SMS Falcon doesn't offer.
- **You're a developer receiving codes in code.** You automate sign-ups or QA tests and want to read codes from a script. The [SMS verification API](https://smsfalcon.com/sms-api) does that.

## How SMS verification works with our numbers

The app never knows the difference: it texts a code to a mobile number, and the code shows up in your SMS Falcon account.

1. **Choose the app and the country.** The price for that pair shows before you pay.
2. **Pay and get the number.** Card or crypto from US$5; accounts in Brazil pay by Pix or crypto. The number is yours right after payment, for about 20 minutes.
3. **Type the number in the app.** Pick the same country in the app's list and ask for the code by SMS.
4. **Read the code and type it back.** The SMS verification code appears in your account. No code before the number expires means an automatic refund.

## Is an SMS verification number the same as a SIM?

No. You don't get a SIM card or a phone line. You get one mobile number in your account for a short window, long enough to receive the verification text, and you can't make or receive calls on it.

That's enough for an app's SMS check. For a number you'll keep and use every day, a SIM from a local carrier is the right tool, and for repeated codes over weeks, a [rented number](https://smsfalcon.com/rent) sits in between.

## What "verified SMS number" means on the app's side

Once you type the code back, the app marks the number as **verified**: it now trusts that the account belongs to whoever received that SMS. Some apps show a badge, others simply let you continue.

The verification stays on the account even after the number's window ends. If the app asks to **verify the number by SMS** again later (a new device, a password reset), you'll need the same number, which is why people who log in often choose a rental.

## SMS verification FAQ

### What is an SMS verification number?

A phone number used to receive the code an app texts you during sign-up or login. You type the code back into the app to prove you can receive messages on that number.

### How do I verify a number by SMS?

Enter the number in the app, choose to receive the code by SMS, then type the code you get. With SMS Falcon, the code shows up in your account.

### What's the difference between verifying by SMS and by call?

By SMS the code arrives as a text; by call a voice reads it out. SMS Falcon numbers receive texts only, so always pick the SMS option.

### Can I use one number to verify more than one app?

One number covers one verification. For several apps, buy a number for each, or rent a number if you need it longer.

### What is an SMS verification code and how long does it last?

A short one-time code, usually 4 to 8 digits. Most apps let it work for a few minutes, so type it as soon as it shows up.

### What does "verified SMS number" mean?

It's the number an app has confirmed by sending it a code that you typed back. The app then links that number to your account.

### I want to send verification codes to my users. Can SMS Falcon do that?

No. SMS Falcon numbers receive codes. Sending codes to your own users needs an SMS sending service. If you want to receive codes from a script, see our API.

### What happens if the SMS verification code never arrives?

The charge goes back to your balance automatically when the number expires without a code.

### Which countries can I get an SMS verification number from?

156+ countries. The countries page lists each one with its starting price.

### Can the number receive calls?

No. It receives text messages only.

### How is this different from an OTP number?

It isn't a different product: an OTP number is the same number named after the one-time password it receives. The OTP page explains the code itself.

### How is this different from a non-VoIP number?

Non-VoIP describes where a number comes from: a mobile carrier range rather than an internet-phone one. It matters for apps that refuse VoIP lines.
