# How to Create a Google Account Without a Phone Number

You can often create a Google account without a phone number, because Google only asks for one on some sign-ups, when it sees a possible spam signal. When it does ask, you can't skip that step, but the number doesn't have to be your personal one: any number that receives the one-time code by SMS meets the requirement.

## Why Google asks for a phone number (and why not always)

Google's help page on verifying your account puts it plainly: to help protect you and stop spammers, **sometimes** phone verification is required to confirm you're a real person before you create an account or sign in.

That "sometimes" is the whole story. Google's own sign-up steps list the phone number as **optional**, so many people create a Gmail without a phone number and never see the question. When something about the sign-up looks risky to Google (the network, the device, lots of sign-ups from one connection), the phone screen appears and you can't continue without it.

Google also limits how many accounts each phone number can create and how many times a number can be used for verification. That's why a number you've used a lot can be turned down.

One more option from Google's sign-up page: you don't need a new Gmail address at all. **Use your existing email** creates a Google account on an address you already have, confirmed by a code sent to that inbox.

## What number works when Google asks

If you want a Google account without a phone number of your own, these are the real options when the phone screen shows up.

| Option | Does it work? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Your personal number | Yes | It's tied to the new account and counts toward Google's limit for that number |
| A second SIM or a family member's line | Yes, if you can read the code | It uses up one of that number's verifications |
| A virtual mobile number for the code | Yes, when Google accepts it for SMS | Your personal line stays out of it; SMS Falcon numbers receive SMS only |
| An internet calling (VoIP) number | Often not | Google checks numbers strictly and often refuses VoIP ranges; see [non-VoIP numbers](/non-voip-number) |
| The QR code screen that asks you to send a text | Not with SMS Falcon | That check needs a number that sends an SMS from your phone; SMS Falcon numbers only receive |

## How to create Gmail without your own phone number, step by step

1. **Start the sign-up.** On Google's sign-in page, click Create account, pick a personal account and fill in your name, birthday and the Gmail address you want.
2. **See whether Google asks for a phone.** If it doesn't, finish without one. If the phone screen shows up, go to step 3.
3. **Get a number for the code.** Buy [a number for Gmail verification](https://smsfalcon.com/virtual-number/gmail) in the country you want, paid by card or crypto.
4. **Enter the number and choose the text option.** Pick the country in Google's list and type the rest. The one-time code shows up in your SMS Falcon account as soon as it lands.
5. **Enter the code and secure the account.** Then add a recovery email of your own and turn on 2-Step Verification with an app or a passkey.

If Google refuses the number or the code never arrives, the charge goes back to your balance automatically. More on how these codes work in [one-time code numbers](https://smsfalcon.com/otp-number).

## What this doesn't do

A number for the code meets Google's requirement for **one** new, legitimate account. It isn't a way to open accounts in bulk: Google limits how many accounts each number can create, and the phone check exists to stop spammers.

It doesn't change Google's rules either. When Google shows the phone screen, that step is required; the only thing that changes is that the number doesn't have to be yours.

And think about later: if that number isn't yours long term, don't leave it as your only recovery method. A recovery email and 2-Step Verification keep you from getting locked out.

## If Google says the number was "used too many times"

Google's Gmail phone verification has a cap per number. When a number reaches it, you'll see "This phone number has been used too many times for verification" or "This phone number cannot be used for verification", and Google's answer is to use a different number.

Retrying, switching browser or changing device won't help, because the limit belongs to the number. The full explanation is in [our guide to the "used too many times" error](https://smsfalcon.com/guides/phone-number-used-too-many-times).

## Creating a Google account without a phone number: FAQ

### Can I create a Gmail account without any phone number?

Yes, when Google doesn't show the phone screen during sign-up. Its sign-up steps list the phone number as optional. If the screen does show up, you can't continue without a number that receives the code.

### Why does Google ask me for a phone when it didn't before?

Google asks only sometimes, to confirm you're a real person and stop spam. Something about that sign-up, such as a shared network or many sign-ups from one connection, can trigger it.

### Does the number have to be mine?

No. Google needs the number to receive the one-time code. It doesn't require your personal line.

### How do I verify a Google account without a phone of my own?

Use a number just for that code. With SMS Falcon you pick a country, the SMS shows up in your account, and if it never arrives the charge goes back to your balance.

### Can I use an email address I already have instead of Gmail?

Yes. On Google's sign-up page, choose Use your existing email and confirm the code Google sends to that inbox.

### Can I use this to create lots of accounts quickly?

No. Google limits how many accounts each phone number can create, and its checks exist to stop spammers. This guide is for one new, legitimate account.

### Can two Google accounts share one phone number?

Google allows a number on more than one account, but limits how many. Once the cap is reached, the number is refused with a "used too many times" or "cannot be used" message.

### What is the QR code screen that asks me to send a text?

On some sign-ups Google shows a QR code that opens a ready-made text on your phone for you to send. SMS Falcon numbers only receive SMS, so they work when Google offers to send you a code, not on that screen.

### Will my account end up with no phone number on it?

If Google didn't ask, yes. If it did, the number stays on the account, and you can remove or change it later in the Personal info section of your Google Account.

### What if Google refuses the number I bought?

If the code never arrives, the charge goes back to your balance automatically. You can try another country from [the Gmail page](https://smsfalcon.com/virtual-number/gmail).
